Travel and Wilderness Medicine

"The Promised Land always lies on the other side of a wilderness."
Havelock Ellis [1859-1939] The Dance of Life, Chap. 5

"Among the therapeutic agents not to be found bottled up and labelled on our shelves, is Travelling; a means of prevention, of cure, and of restoration, which has been famous in all ages."
Daniel Drake [1785-1852] Western Medical and Physical Journal I:305, 1827

Journals

Journals in the Health Sciences Library are indexed in MEDLINE, and are shelved alphabetically by journal title. Relevant journals include the Journal of Wilderness Medicine. Military medicine journals also frequently include articles on medicine in difficult environmental conditions such as deserts, arctic tundra, jungles, and high altitude areas.

Databases

MEDLINE is a bibliographic database of journal citations in over 3500 journals, collected since 1965, and remains the most likely source of travel or wilderness medicine journal citations, but the National Library of Medicine and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration released a new database in 1995 called SPACELINE, about life sciences and medical research performed as part of the space program.

MEDLINE Search Hint

Journal articles are indexed with the most specific terms appropriate to the subject matter of the article, using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) selected by National Library of Medicine indexers. The index term "travel" is used for the medical, social, and psychological aspects of travel and tourism, for articles on the hazards of travel, or for articles on the spread of disease by travel. Other potentially useful terms are "desert climate," altitude sickness," "insect bites and stings," "snake venoms," "frostbite," etc.

For more MEDLINE information, read the Medline Search Guide or consult your librarian.
