Journals

Surgery, anesthesiology, and trauma journals are generally indexed in MEDLINE and are shelved alphabetically by title in the library.

MEDLINE Search Hint

Operative surgery terms can be found in the E4 tree of the MeSH (Medical Subject Headings used by the National Library of Medicine to index medical literature). Terms in this tree are usually coordinated with a specific organ qualified with the subheading "surgery" or with a specific disease qualified with the subheading "surgery." Remember also that there are terms for surgical equipment, orthopedic equipment, and various types of implants, e.g. "Molteno Implants." There are MeSH for some organ or tissue transplants, e.g. "Kidney Transplantation," but the subheading "transplantation" can be attached to other organ names. Terms for surgical specialties are listed in the G2 tree. Terms for surgeons and surgical departments and facilities can be found in the M and N2 trees.

Anesthesia and Analgesia procedures and techniques are listed in the E3 tree, while anesthetics and analgesics can be found listed in the D15 tree.

Trauma is searched using the MeSH "wounds and injuries" in the C21.866 tree, but more specific terms are preferred. Within that tree there are many specific terms, e.g. "near drowning," "brain concussion," "bites, human,"flail chest," etc. The subheading "injuries" can also be attached to specific anatomic headings, animals, and sports terms.

For more MEDLINE information, read the Medline Search Guide or consult your medical librarian.

Patient Education and Support

Many associations, listservs, and support groups raise money for research and education, and exchange information and encouragement for the recovery and rehabilitation of surgical and trauma patients. For example, TBI-SPRT is a supportive listserv for Traumatic Brain Injury patients. Suggested sources of information about these groups include:

To find appropriate listservs and newsgroups (electronic support groups and discussion lists) on the Internet, check the Hancock List or the Medical Matrix, or search DejaNews or the CataList.
