History of the
UMKC Clinical Medicine Librarian Program

The first CML

The first CML began work in September 1971. By 1975 the CML program had become so much a part of the UMKC School of Medicine that the position was specifically mentioned as part of the School's Academic Plan.

"The medical school library supports the specific needs of the School and related teaching hospitals and has relationships to the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry Library, the Linda Hall Library of Science and Technology, the University of Kansas Medical Center Library, the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine Library and the General Library of UMKC. The promise of information storage and retrieval methods and of biomedical communication networks are key factors in planning the library-audio-visual information system. The individual student offices are considered physical extensions of the library-audio-visual facility and, in a real sense, are a part of the information storage and retrieval network. Each Docent Unit is augmented by the full time assistance of a clinical medicine librarian.
