The UMKC School of Medicine and the CML Program are innovative programs created in the early 1970's.
The School of Medicine is designed as a six-year combined B.A.-M.D. program in which students
recently graduated from high school study basic sciences and clinical skills in parallel. The
students participate in a "docent team" caring for hospital patients in their third to sixth years
of study.

The docent team was, and is, made up of a docent (attending physician/teacher), a Pharm.D.,
residents, a clinical medical librarian, and twelve students years 3 to 6, all of whom attend "rounds"
together. Other health care team members such as social workers and dietitians sometimes attend as well.
Rounds include teaching sessions, presentation of patient cases, and visits to patients' rooms.
