Welcome to the Department of Surgery.

This web site will provide you with general information about the department and about the general surgery residency program. Our goal is to help you select a program that is right for you. The mission of the UMKC general surgical residency is to provide quality training that will prepare each of our residents to enter private practice, academic practice, or to seek subspecialty training. With that in mind, our surgical faculty is highly trained and skilled in all major subspecialties in general surgery. Our Shock-Trauma Research Center is nationally known in shock research. Our residents work at Truman Medical Center, an urban core hospital, and Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, a tertiary, private teaching hospital. We also include rotations at Truman Medical Center Lakewood, a county hospital, the Kansas City Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital, and at least one outside private non-teaching hospital. This provides our residents with a great breadth of experience. Within our program are two Level I Trauma Centers, which include a strong program in Surgical Critical Care.We are looking for residents who share our dedication to learning, and wish to become excellent clinical surgeons. The application process for our program is extremely competitive. Our program accepts four categorical residents at the R1 level, and graduates four Chief Residents each year.I hope you will take the time to tour our web site, learn what our program has to offer and examine it more carefully.  If you have other questions, please feel free to contact our department. Thanks for your time. We look forward to hearing from you.
