Overview of the UMKC School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program

The UMKC Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to developing the full potential of each individual resident within the broad array of internal medicine. The UMKC Internal Medicine Residency is a university-based program that offers an extensive spectrum of clinical experiences.

The mission of the UMKC residency programs is to provide high quality patient care, education and training; prepare residents for Board Certification and the practice of internal medicine and its subspecialties; and instill within our residents optimal interpersonal skills, a commitment to their community, and to plant a seed for lifelong scholarship in generating, understanding, and disseminating new knowledge to improve the health of patients.

Full-time and community-based volunteer faculty mentor residents each day at two distinct Kansas City hospitals that have each been honored for their excellence in patient care.

St. Luke’s Hospital is a tertiary care center nationally recognized for its work in cardiovascular disease and winner of the prestigious Baldrige Award for Healthcare Quality. Residents will work with some of the best internists and subspecialists in the region, providing care to a group of patients with diverse medical conditions.

Truman Medical Center-Hospital Hill is a county hospital responsible for providing primary care to a significant number of underprivileged Kansas Citians. It has been selected by the University Health System Consortium as one of the five top teaching hospitals in the nation in quality, alongside Mayo Clinic Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Modern Healthcare magazine placed Truman Medical Centers CEO John Bluford in the top one-third of its “Top 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare.” Residents here provide care to patients with multiple, complex medical and social problems. Residents are viewed as the patients’ doctors in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings.

The combination of these different, but equally stimulating environments allows each of our residents to develop their full potential as physicians, and supports the UMKC residency vision – to be a regional center of excellence where humanistic caregivers mentor and educate internal medicine residents to become outstanding professional physicians and community leaders.

Our faculty is known for teaching. Many medical schools and residency programs are heavily involved in research, while not focusing on teaching as the most important part of the mission.  The UMKC School of Medicine was founded with teaching as the primary driving factor for faculty.

We take our mission seriously and constantly look for new and more effective approaches to develop the clinical skills of our students, residents and fellows. In addition, the school has a long and unique history of close faculty-student and faculty-resident mentorship. These relationships provide residents with educational and career guidance throughout their years of residency training.

Our residency program is committed to providing high-quality clinical training in an atmosphere that promotes humanism and emphasizes collegiality and social responsibility. We view each of our residents as a unique individual and make every effort to provide a residency experience that is meaningful, productive, enjoyable, and challenging.

In turn, what we look for in a resident is a hard working individual who is seeking an excellent training experience, a person who loves to learn, is willing to dig in, do a good job and be professional in all they do. UMKC residents put their patients first.
