Kansas City

Kansas City has a long history as a progressive Midwestern city. What began as a French trading post in 1821 and was named after the Kansa Native American Tribe that lived in this area, Kansas City is now the home of major league sport teams and major industry giants such as Hallmark, Cerner and Sprint. The community is also diverse with many cultures, religions and experiences.

Along with a diverse population, the city also offers a great deal of art and culture opportunities. The Nelson-Atkins Art Museum is a world-class institution with paintings by Monet and Cézanne, and a 22-acre sculpture park by Henry Moore. The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art has pieces by Steven Assael and Ellen Auerbach. Each year the free Heart of America Shakespeare Festival takes place in Southmoreland Park, just a couple blocks East of St. Luke's Hospital. The Lyric Theater and the Starlight Theater bring performers from Broadway and California to Kansas City for ongoing, outstanding productions.

One of our residents, Dominique Crain, M.D., summed up why she likes Kansas City: "It is a great medium size city. There is always something going on, but you never feel lost."
