Welcome From the Chairman
and Program Director

Welcome to the UMKC Internal Medicine Residency Program website. Inside, you will find that our program is a values-driven residency. Our five core values are: patient safety, education excellence, patient care excellence, professionalism in practice, and taking care of ourselves and our colleagues. We strive to develop the full potential of each individual resident within the broad array of internal medicine: as generalists or sub-specialists, hospital or outpatient-based, urban or rural.

We have 96 full-time and community-based volunteer faculty who participate in our program. These clinician-educators are known for their teaching. Our residents arementored by these individuals in our two affiliated teaching hospitals, together which offer a unique combination of training: the rich tradition of learning at a public hospital with the innovative care of a large private referral center.

St. Luke’s Hospital is a tertiary care center that is nationally recognized in cardiovascular disease and has won the prestigious Baldrige Award for Healthcare Quality. Truman Hospital is a county hospital responsible for providing primary care to a significant number of underprivileged Kansas Citians. It was recently named by the UHC as one of the five top teaching hospitals in the nation in quality, alongside the Mayo Clinic Hospital, and the Brigham in Boston. Together, our twohospitals provide a superb patient care mix, from high touch to high tech.

Indeed, our residency is committed to providing high-quality clinical training in an atmosphere that promotes humanism and emphasizes collegiality and social responsibility. Examine our program, our faculty, our residents, and our graduates carefully. We are confident that our commitment to education and the clinical training you will receive are second to none.
