Welcome to the UMKC School of Medicine Geriatric Medicine Fellowship

The goals for our Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program are as follows:

  1. To train family practice or internal medicine geriatricians to be expert providers of primary care, consultants, teachers, or researchers in geriatric medicine.
  2. To provide optimal medical care to frail elderly or functionally disabled persons in the clinic, hospital, or long-term care setting.
  3. To help the geriatric medicine fellows and fellowship faculty train internal medicine and family practice resident doctors in their required one-month geriatric medicine rotation, and to train UMKC School of Medicine medical students as they rotate through the geriatric medicine service at Truman Medical Center Lakewood.
  4. To enhance geriatric medical care in the region by promoting intra-institutional and inter-institutional geriatric medicine and gerontology educational programs.

The most important qualification of a successful geriatric fellowship applicant is a sincere desire to provide excellent care to the frail and elderly. A desire to help alleviate the current shortage of geriatric medicine physicians due to the rapidly expanding geriatric age range population in the United States is also an important quality in a successful fellowship applicant.

Sincerely,
Jon Dedon, M.D.
