Welcome to the UMKC School of Medicine Geriatric Medicine Fellowship
The goals for our Geriatric Medicine Fellowship program are as follows:
- To train family practice or internal medicine geriatricians to be expert providers of primary care, consultants, teachers, or researchers in geriatric medicine.
- To provide optimal medical care to frail elderly or functionally disabled persons in the clinic, hospital, or long-term care setting.
- To help the geriatric medicine fellows and fellowship faculty train internal medicine and family practice resident doctors in their required one-month geriatric medicine rotation, and to train UMKC School of Medicine medical students as they rotate through the geriatric medicine service at Truman Medical Center Lakewood.
- To enhance geriatric medical care in the region by promoting intra-institutional and inter-institutional geriatric medicine and gerontology educational programs.
The most important qualification of a successful geriatric fellowship applicant is a sincere desire to provide excellent care to the frail and elderly. A desire to help alleviate the current shortage of geriatric medicine physicians due to the rapidly expanding geriatric age range population in the United States is also an important quality in a successful fellowship applicant.
Sincerely,
Jon Dedon, M.D.
