Teaching Faculty
- Individually and jointly committed to resident education.
- Six surgeons from strong academic backgrounds with training at Vanderbilt University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and The University of Virginia.
- Certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
- Additional expertise in peripheral vascular surgery, non-cardiac thoracic surgery, and surgical critical care.

Residents
Residents gain progressive responsibility for the diagnosis, evaluation, operative care and post operative management of patients under the guidance of the faculty. Residents gain experience in the entire spectrum of general thoracic and cardiovascular disorders.
Residents supervise
- the activity of residents who rotate on the service from other programs including general surgery, cardiology, anesthesia, and critical care
- medical students rotating on the service
- all patient management decisions are made by the cardiothoracic surgical service.
Mid America Heart Institute
- A nine-story building appended to Saint Luke’s Hospital, a tertiary care, teaching hospital in the University of Missouri-Kansas City system
- Dedicated operating rooms, surgical and coronary care units, patient recovery areas, and support services
- Anesthesia administered by certified cardiac anesthesiologists dedicated to the Heart Institute
The department of cardiovascular diseases is separate from other surgical and medical departments. It is made up of staff members of Saint Luke’s Hospital who work in the Heart Institute, including cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, and anesthesiologists.
