The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine is a fully accredited residency program designed to provide housestaff with a comprehensive clinical and research experience ranging from minor to the most complex anesthetics in all of the subspecialty areas. The goal of the program is to provide the necessary training and experience for a resident to be both a clinically and academically successful perioperative physician, as well as to direct the resident toward the successful completion of the American Board of Anesthesiology certification examination.

The Department of Anesthesiology consists of three teaching hospitals – Saint Luke’s Hospital, Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill and Children’s Mercy Hospital. Throughout the course of training, residents rotate at all three hospitals. These institutions provide a model environment for residents desiring to develop the skills and knowledge level representative of competent, well-trained anesthesiologists. All members of the teaching staff have unmodified academic appointments at the Medical School, are board-certified, and many are subspecialty trained and certified.

It is the belief of the faculty that residency training should be a balance of life experiences. This includes adequate exposure for the resident in the clinical care of patients, sufficient time for didactic instruction, opportunities for self-reflection and personal study, participation in the administrative aspects of the Department, and the development of friendships that will last a lifetime. The training program offers all of these elements.
