Visiting Students Elective Information

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine has pioneered many successful innovations in medical education. Students just out of high school enter a year-round, six-year curriculum at UMKC that integrates courses in liberal arts and basic medical sciences with early clinical exposure.

The Docent System is a cornerstone of the program. Department of Medicine faculty members serve as Docents who each lead a group of students in clinical rotations during years four through six. Education Assistants, Clinical Medical Librarians and Doctors of Clinical Pharmacy are Docent Team members who provide further guidance to help students reach their education goals.

Innovations at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine challenge and encourage medical students to become competent and caring physicians. UMKC's residency programs do the same through the participation of local primary affiliated hospitals: Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill, Truman Medical Center Lakewood, Saint Luke's Hospital, Children's Mercy Hospital and Western Missouri Mental Health Center.

The UMKC School of Medicine and its affiliated hospitals offer residencies in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Oral Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Radiology. Additional subspecialty fellowship programs include Cardiology, Pulmonary, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology and others. Residents and Fellows enjoy a close and supportive relationship with the faculty, staff and students, and experience active and diverse clinical opportunities.
