UMKC Summer Scholars ProgramOverview of Program:The UMKC School of Medicine Summer Scholars Program began in 1980 to identify minority and disadvantaged high school juniors and seniors in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have the scholastic ability and interest to pursue a career in the health sciences. The Summer Scholars program is for minority and disadvantaged juniors and seniors attending public and private high schools in the Kansas City metropolitan area (Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas, and Jackson, Platte, Clay and Cass Counties in Missouri.) An Advanced Summer Scholars program runs concurrently with the regular Summer Scholars program. It is open to students who completed the regular program the previous summer. The Summer Scholars programs are held during the month of July, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. |
CurriculumThe curriculum is made up of a variety of experiences ranging from didactic (daily) lectures to critical skills experiences and clinical rotations at Truman Medical Center, the UMKC School of Medicine's primary teaching hospital. Didactic Experiences (Daily Instruction)

The advanced program includes a unit on Health Sciences Research in which students are paired with medical school faculty members. | |

ApplicationArea high school counselors receive packets early each March that include a personal letter explaining the program and application forms for distribution. Counselors are asked to identify students who might benefit from the Summer Scholars Program. All applicants must submit a completed application form.
