Welcome to the Department of Neurology!
The Department of Neurology was created to advance clinical, educational, and research activities in neurology at the UMKC School of Medicine.
The department, including our recently approved adult neurology residency program, is the beneficiary of a truly diverse clinical experience and exposure to a wide variety of neurologic disorders at Truman Medical Center (TMC) and at our major affiliated sites: Saint Luke’s Marion Bloch Neuroscience Institute, the Department of Child Neurology at the Children’s Mercy Hospital, the Center for Behavioral Health, and the Neuroscience Institute at Research Medical Center.
Our first priority is to provide state-of-the-art neurological care to all of our patients, whether we are treating individuals with highly complex conditions or less complicated clinical problems. Our clinical care encompasses all neurological diseases, including disorders of the brain, such as stroke, seizures, traumatic brain injury, tumors, multiple sclerosis, migraine, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease; disorders of the spine/spinal cord, muscles, neuro-muscular junction, spinal-peripheral nerves, such as neuropathy, myopathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and myasthenia gravis; infectious diseases of the nervous system; genetic and paroxysmal disorders.
As part of an academic medical center, our neurologists stay abreast of the latest research, diagnosis, and treatment science in the wide scope of neurological diseases. This commitment, which includes collaborating with our affiliated hospitals to create continuing medical education courses, makes us particularly adept in distinguishing between different conditions and offering the very best care to our patients. It also provides a unique environment for educating the next generation of neurologists and allied health professionals.
Neurology is an exciting field that is experiencing rapid advancement in both the basic understanding and treatment of many devastating diseases. Our department in conjunction with our clinical partners is positioned to provide the practical benefits of these advances directly to the community that we serve.
I hope you enjoy learning about Neurology at UMKC!
