Welcome to your newsletter — Booster Shots
Happy 2018, and welcome to the first issue of Booster Shots, a newsletter for parents and other friends of the UMKC School of Medicine. I’m Shanna Kimmis, president of the Friends group, which is open to all parents or guardians of students, School of Medicine alumni, or other individuals interested in furthering the mission of the medical school.
As you know, being a medical student can be challenging, as is having a daughter or son in the program. The Friends are here to help every family meet that challenge by supporting one another and the school through fundraising activities and other services. We also hold a special information session and reception each fall for parents of our new students, and we work to cultivate social relations among parents, administration, faculty, alumni, staff and students of the UMKC School of Medicine.
If you would like to know more about becoming a member of the Friends group, or to renew your current membership, click here. And we’re always seeking ideas for events and projects that could support the school and its students. You can send those to Director of Advancement Fred Schlichting at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We plan to produce Booster Shots quarterly — in January, April, June and September. We hope it’s another way to help you connect with other parents and friends, keep informed about activities at the School of Medicine, and support its students as they train to be future physicians.
Shanna Kimmis, president
Friends help students keep fit
Friends’ fundraising has made several amenities available at the School of Medicine, most recently a second Ping-Pong table for student use. The new table is on the third floor of the school and complements one on the fifth floor in providing a place for fitness and relaxation.
The Friends have also purchased a massage chair for students, sports equipment that can be checked out from the Wellness Program office, and special water-bottle filling stations at water fountains throughout the school.
Get in the swing
Mark Feb. 25, 2018, on your calendars now for Swinging for Sojourner, a golf competition to raise money for the Sojourner Health Clinic. The School of Medicine student organization is a free clinic that treats more than 300 uninsured and underserved patients, thanks to more than 1,500 student volunteer hours. School of Medicine students coordinate and staff the health clinic, one of Kansas City’s important resources for its most vulnerable patients.
The event, at Top Golf in Overland Park, Kansas, will run from noon to 4 p.m. The registration fee includes tournament play, a buffet lunch, a silent auction and an awards program. A variety of sponsorships are available, from individual tickets to group packages (up to six participants each). More information and sponsorship details are here.
The most exciting day of the year?
At the School of Medicine, that well could be Match Day. Each year, more than 100 soon-to-be physicians find out where they will be heading for their residencies. This year, the big day is March 16. Make plans to join us at 10 a.m., when all medical students across the country learn where their next step takes them in their medical education journey. It will be an inspiring time on Hospital Hill, as shown through this look back to Match Day 2017.
