Located among the rolling hills of southeastern Kansas City, Truman Medical Center Lakewood has been providing services to the area since the 1850's. Today the old and new have converged to provide comprehensive healthcare in this fast growing community. TMC Lakewood is an ideal setting for the UMKC School of Medicine’s Department of Community and Family Medicine. Facilities like the Bess Truman Family Practice Clinic, Lakewood Family Healthcare, the H & R Block Baby Center and the Lakewood Care Center mean TMC Lakewood can serve people throughout their lives. TMC Lakewood has 102 patient care beds with an additional 212 long term care beds in the Care Center. With such a diverse patient load, residents have a wide spectrum of learning opportunities in family medicine including:
Elder Care Pediatrics Rehabilitation services Transitional Living With 36 residents, two geriatric subspecialty residents and three family practice/obstetrical subspecialty residents, the program is the largest family practice residency in Kansas City. The medical center also provides a site for the unopposed education of family practice residents with 76,000 visits to the family practice clinic, 30,000 emergency department visits and more than 4,700 admissions annually. TMC Lakewood and the Department of Community and Family Medicine also provide educational opportunities for UMKC medical students in years one and five and opportunities for electives in year six. The Department of Community and Family Medicine consists of six divisions: pre-doctoral education, post-doctoral education, in-patient medicine, ambulatory care, community health, and administration. A full spectrum of experiences is available to family practice residents including: geriatrics, pediatrics, radiology, internal medicine, pathology, medical rehabilitation, pharmacology, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, sports medicine, community medicine and practice management. Outreach clinics in Oak Grove, Independence and Grandview also offer the opportunity to interact with patients in a community setting. TMC Lakewood is one of three major institutions, in conjunction with Truman Medical Center Hospital Hill and Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health Network, that make up Truman Medical Centers, a network of facilities offering comprehensive health care services. |
